Jewish Family & Career Services Demonstrates Commitment to
the Homeless
Jewish Family & Career Services’ National Family Week observance
provided a platform for the agency to raise critical awareness
on homelessness and to celebrate the agency’s year-round efforts
to work for positive change for Atlanta’s vulnerable children
and families.
By shedding light on the emptiness of homelessness and promoting
potential solutions to its multiple challenges, the agency hopes
to make a direct impact in improving the economic
self-sufficiency of vulnerable families.
On November 12, more than 400
guests attended an empty bowl dinner, where area restaurants
donated simple soups and breads that were served from a
simulated soup kitchen. It was the agency's intention to create
an atmosphere that resembled the reality of homeless life.
“The volunteers at Jewish Family and Career Services were
incredible,” said Susan Dreyfus, COO, Alliance for Children
and Families, who attended the celebration.
“The event was perfectly planned to not only be fun and
enjoyable, (you ought to see Gary Miller play the drums!),
but it brought the community together to better understand
and respond to the needs of people who are homeless.”
The empty bowl dinner also included educational displays,
resource material, entertainment, and agency staff, who were
eager to answer any questions and provide information
related to issues of homelessness.
Guests were also treated to a one-of-a-kind handcrafted bowl
donated by local students, artists and volunteers, as a
symbolic gesture about the severity of homelessness.
