The Village Demonstrates Strong Commitment to National Family Week

In order to make a difference and create systems change for vulnerable children and families, The Village for Families & Children, Inc., located in Hartford, CT, made it a priority to use National Family Week as a platform to increase civic engagement about the issues surrounding food insecurity.

The Village, hosted their third annual policy forum entitled "The Politics of Food." This event allowed policymakers, community members, and community service agencies to come together and focus on food insecurity – its causes and local effects, the nutritional and health care implications of food insecurity, and solutions and remedies to the problem.

"The Village staff did a terrific job in spreading awareness about the serious implications food insecurity has on vulnerable families," said Peter Goldberg, president and CEO of the Alliance for Children and Families, who attended the event."Throughout the evening, you could sense the general enthusiasm and passion the agency has towards educating and ratifying hunger."

State and city officials presented their policy platform regarding child and family issues for the upcoming 2007 legislative session. The dialogue explored the issue of cuts to social safety net programs, (food stamp, AFDC, etc.) and how vulnerable families with children are affected.

A health fair was also incorporated into the event that offered health and nutritional material, food stamp registration, legislative petitioning, and food pantry information.

The Village's mission is to build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children. The Village offers programs and services that help children achieve academic and social success; place children in safe and permanent homes; help parents succeed with effective parenting skills; and help families prevent and manage crisis.  Read more about the agency.
